I am so excited to be starting this new school year with you at MAK. Some of you are “old hands” and I will depend on your guidance to help me learn everything there is to know about MAK. To those of you who are new this year, I hope we will grow together!
Although I am new to MAK and Kaohsiung, I am not new to Morrison or Taiwan. I have lived in Taiwan for close to 40 years and have been part of Morrison since 1970. Now that is a really long time! I think Morrison is a really great school and I believe we will have a terrific year together.
This year we are going to focus on Gratitude. This word means, “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.” We have so much to be thankful for and this year we will be focusing on how to experience and express gratitude. Br. David Steindl-Rast, who has devoted his life to gratitude and gratefulness, says that gratitude is the response we have to an unearned gift. He then goes on to say that everything we have is a gift; the day, the air we breathe, electricity, colors, everything. In the Bible, Paul reminds us to “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!” These are the ideas we want to think about and act upon this year.
