Welcome to Morrison Social Studies!
Social studies instruction at Morrison unites two important elements. One is acquiring a solid knowledge base of historical, social, economic, geographic, human behavioral, and governmental concepts. The other is applying the knowledge base to life situations using a global Christian perspective and advanced thinking skills. Christians as citizens of the kingdom of God must live out their faith ethically, morally, and wisely in the kingdoms of mankind.
Using a United States based curriculum, we realize the importance of a global approach to history, democratic governments, and geography to meet the needs of our diverse population. Morrison students and teachers come from dozens of home countries; this wealth of culture and experience adds perspective and color to the learning experience.
Last year, MAK students applyied their learning in Social Studies by reaching out into different areas of Taiwan. One of the latest was the Crosspoint World Vision service trip to Mei Lan, an aboriginal agricultural village, where our students led sport clinics, were reading buddies, led singing, and experienced Ginger crop agriculture firsthand. This fit in well with the grade 8 Citizenship Unit, the grade 7 China / Taiwan Unit, and with the school's mission to dynamically impact our world. We also conducted our second visit to a physically and mentally handicapped school near MAK, and were even featured in a local TV broadcast and three newspapers. Students led the others in art projects or other activites and got to know them better. Many students plan to participate in the March 30 Hour Famine, a multinational event raising money for deprived children worldwide.
Last year the grade seven students visited the Chi-Mei museum, historical sites in Tainan, the Chen family's shipbuilding company, and AVRDC, a local research facility dedicated to fighting poverty in third-world nations through improved agricultural practices.
We plan to provide similar learning opportunities this year, as well,
beginning with a grade seven culture trip to Lukang and Taipei Oct.
