6th Greek Myths

Following up of our study of the Greek myths, we studied other traditional literature.  These are stories that are great for reading out loud, so we worked hard at improving our oral fluency to present them to you.  The students had many lessons on diction, tempo, volume, and expression, and it paid off.  Enjoy!

The Bamboo Beads - from Trinidad and Tobago, was retold by Lynn Joseph.  This folk tale features Papa Bois, one of the islands' popular folklore characters.  His duty is to protect trees and woodland animals, which include the scarlet ibis, the iguana, and many poisonous snakes.  It is read by: Tiffany and Claire

The Disobedient Child - a fable from Guatemala, retold by Victor Montejo, is about a boy who ignores warnings.  The boy seems unwilling to listen until he is put to the test by someone with supernatural powers.  It is read by: Austen, John, and Barry

Where the Girl Rescued Her Brother - retold by Joesph Bruchac, is an oral history of a battle between the Cheyenne Native Americans and the U.S. government.  It is read by: Joseph, Steve, and Dennis

The Legend of the Hummingbird - retold by Pura Belpre is a legend from Puerto Rico that explains the origins and habits of hummingbirds.  It is read by: Emily, Faustine, and Richard

Why Monkeys Live in Trees - retold by Julius Lester, is a West African folk tale about Monkey's attempt to trick other animals.  Like most folk tales, it also attempts to explain something about nature, in this case, why monkeys behave the way they do.  It is read by: Kevin C, Connie, Paul, Terence, and Brian

In the Land of the Small Dragon - retold by Joesph Bruchac, is an oral history of a battle between the Cheyenne Native Americans and the U.S. government.  It is read by: Cole, Aurora, Linus, and Winnie

King Thrushbeard - a fairy tale retold by the Brothers Grimm, is about a mediaeval princess who finds fault with almost everyone.  It is read by: Angela, Kevin S., Janice, and Rosalind
