Welcome to second grade!
This year will be full of new and exciting adventures in learning. This is the final year of the lower elementary grades, so we will be working towards a smooth transition to the upper elementary.
We will begin using assignments books to keep track of homework assignments and homework folders will be sent home with daily assignments. Learning how to use our resources at school and at home will be a big focus this year.
We will spend two days every week working in the library with the Accelerated Reader program. On Tuesdays, the 6th grade class will come in to read the AR books with us and model different oral fluency skills. On Thursdays, we will focus in on non-fiction books that pertain to the different areas of science and social studies that we will be coving throughout the year.
This year, we will be focusing on three main writing pieces. We will write a biography report, a fictional story, and a friendly letter. We will use the skills we learn through our 6-Traits program to really begin to find ourselves as 2nd grade authors. Come see all our work displayed on our author wall outside the classroom!
We are beginning a new science curriculum this year where we will focus on Life Cycles, Rocks, and Force and Motion. Alternating with science throughout the year is all our social studies units. We begin the year with Geography and move into topics such as the US Government, Economics, US History, and Culture. Some of the highlights will be studying about Native Americans and learning more about China, India, and South Korea.
Math will be full of new and exciting hands on experiences. We will learn how to add and subtract two digit numbers, take surveys and make graphs, count American money, name different 2-D and 3-D shapes, and measure using the metric system and the US system. Lots of fun activities to gear up for third grade!!!
Finally, by the end of the year, students will be able to navigate through a Bible, looking up many scripture verses. They will learn the order of the books of the Bible through singing. We will also be looking at the lives of different people in the Bible and examining the many character traits these people exemplified.
